After a series of lockdowns, curfews, and restrictions prohibiting indoor dining, food chains nationwide have had a difficult time coping under the pandemic. For established businesses like Shakey’s, however, it was important to dedicate resources to their team members’ health and wellbeing.

“When the pandemic first hit, we were quick to respond with our business continuity plans and focused on strategies that would help guide and protect our team,” shared Shakey’s President Vicente Gregorio. As those serving in the food industry remained essential during the pandemic, Shakey’s underwent a major restructuring so that they could allow their employees to be assigned to store branches closer to their homes. “We understand that transportation options became limited, and did our best to avoid any safety concerns of our team members,” Gregorio added. With the reassignments, over 87% of employees now spend less than thirty minutes to reach their respective stores.

Shakey’s has also extended its initiative to create an incentive program that will drive better participation of employees getting vaccinated with its Five-Tier COVID-19 Vaccination Program. With this, they ensure all employees are able to avail of their vaccine by allowing them to file their vaccination schedule as Official Business. Fully-vaccinated staff are also given tokens and are included in an employee raffle to encourage uptake of the life-saving vaccines. They also have provisions for the vaccination of their employees’ dependents. 100% of dine-in employees have been fully vaccinated.

“We make sure that all our team members, including outsourced manpower, are vaccinated because we have a responsibility to support the nation’s drive in fighting this pandemic. Furthermore, it’s important for us to establish confidence in all our guests that Shakey’s is a safe place to both dine in and order deliveries from,” says Shakey’s General Manager Jorge Concepcion.

Team members are also provided with assistance through their “AGILE” (Ang Galing If Ligtas Everyone) program. Shakey’s has been providing hazard meals, hazard pay and free transportation during lockdowns. Employees are also connected with telemedicine services through a partnership with One Reliance for contact tracing, PCR testing, and random antigen testing.

Aside from implementing rules in following standard safety protocols at the workplace, Shakey’s has also encouraged its employees to engage in mental health activities. This year, several programs, including a Mental Health Survey, regular mental health check-ins, and a series of webinars were conducted through their partnership with DLSU – Dasmarinas Center for Applied Psychology to offer free online Psychological Services and with Philippine Mental Health Association, Inc in. ”While we understand the need to focus on business recovery, we also believe that our team members’ safety and well-being should be our top priorities,” said Gregorio.
